Hundreds of customers spend time in our safe showroom examining the many Liberty Gun Safes we have on display. Occasionally someone will ask how the safe door seals to the frame. They'll be concerned that the safe door doesn't seem completely airtight and wonder how that could affect the contents in a fire. Good news is that these doors can be adjusted for a tighter, or a looser fit depending on the customer's needs. And even better news is that the fire protection actually comes from a little-known component called an intumescent seal.
Now, you might not have heard of an intumescent seal before, but it's an absolute game-changer when it comes to fire safety. These seals, like the Palusol® seals used in Liberty Gun Safes, are the real heroes during a fire. At room temperature, they’re just sitting there, unassuming and barely noticeable. But crank up the heat to 200–300°F, and they spring into action.

Here’s how it works: as the temperature climbs, the seal material reacts and starts expanding. And we’re not talking a little bit of puffing up—when Palusol seals reach 212 degrees they expand at least 7 times their original size. That’s when the magic happens. The expanding seal fills every tiny gap and seam around the door, creating an airtight barrier that keeps the heat, smoke, and even water from firefighting efforts out of the safe. Inside, your firearms, documents, and other valuables are tucked away in a little cocoon of safety.
The best part? You don’t need to do anything special to make it work. The Palusol seal on a Liberty Safe just does its job when it needs to, no maintenance or special tricks required. That said, it’s always a good idea to inspect your safe’s door and seal now and then to make sure everything’s in good shape.
So, the next time you’re eyeing a Liberty Gun Safe in the showroom and wondering how that seemingly loose door can protect your valuables in a fire, remember: it’s all about the intumescent seal. This little strip of material might not look like much, but it’s the ultimate safeguard when things heat up—literally. Whether you’re storing your prized firearm collection or irreplaceable family documents, you can rest easy knowing a Palusol seal has got your back.
